This simple and refreshing chopped salad, is a perfect side dish for a variety of meals, especially rich curries and rice dishes.
Ingredients
- For the Salad:
- 1 cucumber, thinly sliced
- 1 red onion, thinly sliced
- 1-2 tomatoes, thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup thinly sliced radish
- 1-2 green chilies, finely chopped (optional, for heat)
- 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
- A few fresh mint leaves, chopped (optional, for a cooling flavor)
- For the Dressing:
- Juice of 1 lemon or lime
- 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon chaat masala (optional, for a classic tangy and savory flavor)
Directions
- Prepare the Vegetables: Thinly slice the cucumber, red onion, tomatoes, and radish. For a less pungent onion, you can soak the sliced onion in cold water for 5-10 minutes, then drain and pat dry.
- Combine: In a medium bowl, combine all the sliced vegetables. Add the green chilies, cilantro, and mint leaves (if using).
- Make the Dressing: In a small bowl, whisk together the lemon or lime juice, salt, black pepper, and chaat masala (if using).
- Toss and Serve: Pour the dressing over the vegetables and toss gently to combine. For the best results, let the salad sit for 10-15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Serve fresh.
